UL is on of the largest comprehensive and leading institutions representing the field of education in the Baltic States. In recent years we have achieved a significant progress in the area of high-level sports. UL offers the opportunity of dual careers with basketball among the main sports supported! Over the past 7 years we have managed to create a competitive basketball team playing in the highest level of the Latvian Basketball League, which encourages the young players to progress as both, professionals in the court and intelligent personalities. In addition, a whole basketball system (players, coaches, cheerleaders, fans) is developed, involving students from secondary schools.

The main outcome – each summer the players and coaches of UL represent the Latvian Youth Basketball League. Moreover, in summer 2017 a national student team for prestigious World Universiade will be formed on the basis of UL basketball team.

While some of the work done so far is based on the support of enormous enthusiasm and patronage, further financial support plays a key role in achieving the goals.
